Retablos are a devotional folk art form from Mexico and the Southwest US. They are small paintings on wood of Catholic saints and angels. To create these affordable heart-felt paintings of saints, angels and blessings, Lynn Garlick has brought to the folk art of Retablo making, all the skills and passions that she has learned through a lifetime of drawing, woodworking and painting.
Lynn paints her original retablos on traditional pine boards, carving and then painting them with watercolor or occasionally oil and finishes them with a polyurethane. To create her production work the images are mounted on 1/8 inch baltic birch to create the Pocket Saints. On the back of the retablos is the story of the saint's life. Many of them also have a prayer.
Our Lady, Undoer of Knots
"Holy Mother, Undoer of Knots,
may the unknotted cords of your wisdom
free me from the knotted confusions of my mind,
so I am rendered harmless and move in the world
with clarity of mind and kindness of heart."
