St. Mary Magdalene: (Feast: July 22) St. Mary Magdalene was one of the closest followers of Jesus. After having seven demons cast out of her, she became one of Jesus’ most faithful, loyal friends, following him as a disciple. She was present even at the crucifixion, when most of the apostles ran away. On Easter morning, Mary Magdalene was the first to encounter the resurrected Jesus in the garden, and he sent her to tell the others that he was risen. From this sending, she has come to be known as “Apostle to the Apostles.” While history sometimes has conflated St. Mary Magdalene’s identity with the repentant prostitute St. Mary of Egypt or the repentant woman who bathed Jesus with her tears, Scripture does not name her past sins.
